Diamond Dogs split double-header

Georgia catcher Joey Lewis hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and recorded five RBIs as the No. 5 Bulldogs defeated Winthrop 13-2 to gain a split in a doubleheader with the Eages on Wednesday. Winthrop won the opener 7-4.

In the second game, Georgia (26-6) pounded out 17 hits, including home runs by Levi Hyams (his third), Rich Poythress (his 14th) and Lewis (his ninth and 10th).

Poythress recorded four RBIs and is tied for ninth all-time in home runs (32) and RBIs (155).

Pitcher Chase Hawkins (3-1) earned the win, going five innings and allowing five hits and one earned run and striking out one. Four relievers followed, giving up but three hits and one run.

In the first game, Jason Leaver (3-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs, pitching 22/3 inning and allowing three unearned runs. Winthrop (20-11) had 13 hits to Georgia's six. No Bulldog had more than one hit in the loss.

The Bulldogs will play a three-game Southeastern Conference series with Kentucky this weekend, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
